How Much Artificial Grass Do I Need? A Measuring and Roll Layout Guide
Author: YESTOBUY Team Date Posted:3 October 2026
The first step in buying artificial grass is calculating your area. The next step is finding a roll layout that actually fits it. A roll with enough square metres can still be the wrong shape for your garden.
Measure the space in metres
Measure the length and width at more than one point, especially where walls or fences are not parallel. Record the largest measurements, mark obstacles and draw a simple plan. Note drains, doors and any curved edges. Confirm your measurements before buying or cutting turf.
Calculate a rectangular area
Area in square metres = length in metres × width in metres.
A space measuring 2m × 6m has an area of 12m². A space measuring 3m × 5m has an area of 15m². These are the finished areas, before allowing for trimming or the dimensions of the roll you buy.
Split an L-shaped area into rectangles
Draw the shape and divide it into non-overlapping rectangles. Calculate each area and add them together. For example, a 4m × 3m section plus an adjoining 2m × 2m section covers 12m² + 4m² = 16m². Do not count the same corner twice.
Compare roll layouts, not just total area
Consider a 3m × 5m rectangle. A 2m × 8m roll contains 16m², but cannot cover that space in one piece. Subject to the selected range’s available sizes, a 4m × 5m roll contains 20m² and can cover it with width trimmed off. Alternatively, two 2m × 5m pieces also contain 20m² but require a join and trimming.
This is a layout example, not a final order recommendation. You still need enough allowance for your site’s edges, fitting method and exact measurements.
Allow for trimming and keep the pile direction consistent
There is no single waste percentage that fits every project. A simple rectangle and an irregular garden can need very different allowances. Mark each piece on your plan, including where it will be cut from the roll. Do not rotate an offcut simply to make it fit if doing so changes the fibre direction: neighbouring pieces can then look different.
For curves or obstacles, ask your installer to review the cutting plan. Check the actual roll dimensions and any listed tolerances before committing to the layout.
Before placing your order
- Confirm all measurements and record the units.
- Choose a range and check its available roll widths and lengths.
- Plan the position and direction of every piece.
- Allow for edge trimming and obstacles.
- Budget for joins, fixings, base preparation and delivery.
