Choosing Artificial Grass for Dogs: Drainage, Cleaning and Comfort

A dog area needs more than a green appearance. Before choosing artificial grass, think about where waste will be cleaned, how rinse water will drain and how the surface will be used in summer.
Start with a cleaning and drainage plan
Check the turf backing and the route water will take beneath it. Drainage holes can let water through the grass, but a poorly draining base can still hold moisture. Ask your installer how the whole system will drain, including after heavy rain or cleaning.
For a balcony or paved area, establish an appropriate drainage route before laying turf. Do not assume that covering concrete with grass will create drainage, and do not direct pet waste or dirty rinse water into stormwater drains.
Check the supplier’s intended use
Ask whether the particular turf and installation system are suitable for your planned dog area. Consider your dog’s size, activity level and habits. A dog that digs or chews may need extra supervision and a different layout. Landscaping turf is not an edible material or a chew toy.
Product specifications such as pile height and stitch rate help you compare construction, but do not prove antibacterial performance, odour control or pet safety. Look for supporting information before relying on those claims.
Think about access for regular cleaning
Choose a location where you can remove solid waste promptly and clean the grass according to its care instructions. Check which cleaners are compatible with the fibres and backing, follow the cleaner’s label, and keep pets away until the stated re-entry conditions are met.
Do not mix cleaning products. Persistent smells can indicate that the drainage or cleaning routine needs attention; covering the smell with fragrance does not resolve the underlying issue.
Secure the edges and joins
Discuss suitable edge fixing with your installer. Loose corners, exposed fixings or lifting joins can attract chewing and digging. Inspect the area regularly and repair lifting edges before allowing continued use. Do not leave loose grass offcuts or installation materials within reach of your dog.
Plan shade for hot weather
Synthetic turf can become hot in direct sunlight. Include shade in your layout, check the surface temperature before use and give your dog access to a cooler resting area. Do not assume that UV stabilisation means the surface remains cool.
Compare turf for your household
When comparing CATHIE 35mm, CASTLE 40mm and WENDY 40mm, consider appearance and cleaning practicality alongside the listed construction. Ask about the selected product’s suitability and care requirements rather than choosing by pile height alone.
