Artificial Grass for Balconies: What to Check Before Buying
Author: YESTOBUY Team Date Posted:3 October 2026
Artificial grass can introduce a lawn-like appearance to a balcony, but the existing surface and drainage must guide the project. Before choosing a roll, check how the balcony works and whether the proposed installation is permitted.
Check building, strata or rental requirements
If you rent or live in a strata property, check the applicable requirements before changing the balcony surface. Ask about permitted materials, fixing methods and any building fire-performance requirements. Obtain the product documentation needed for your building; a landscaping description alone does not confirm suitability.
Keep drainage outlets accessible
Locate drains and observe where rainwater currently flows. Turf backing with drainage holes still needs a clear path for water underneath. Do not cover outlets or create a barrier that holds water against walls or door thresholds.
Ask an installer familiar with balcony surfaces to assess the proposed system, including how it will allow drainage and future maintenance. Avoid drilling into a waterproofed surface or applying adhesive without checking compatibility and permission.
Measure door clearance and the full surface build-up
Check the clearance below opening doors and around thresholds. Pile height alone is not the complete installed thickness: the backing and any permitted underlay or drainage layer also take up space. Confirm the proposed build-up before ordering.
Make sure the layout does not interfere with doors, access routes or inspection points. Check the finished edges for trip hazards.
Choose dimensions that fit the balcony
Measure at several points and draw the shape, including posts, drains and corners. A balcony measuring 1.5m × 4m covers 6m². A 2m × 4m roll contains 8m² and leaves width to trim, before any extra fitting allowance needed for the actual site.
For an irregular shape, plan each cut rather than buying by area alone. Our artificial grass measuring guide includes examples for calculating areas and planning joins.
Compare the look and feel
Consider how the grass will sit alongside furniture and plants. Compare close-up images of CATHIE 35mm with CASTLE 40mm and WENDY 40mm. Check the complete product specifications and, if available, inspect a sample.
Plan fixing and everyday care
Do not leave an unsecured piece where wind may lift it. Choose an approved fixing method suitable for the site and keep drains available for inspection. Remove debris and follow the product’s cleaning instructions. For pet use, also read our dog-area selection guide.
Plan for direct sun: artificial grass can become hot, so check the surface before barefoot or pet use. For help comparing listed sizes, browse YES4HOMES synthetic turf or contact YESTOBUY with your measurements and balcony details.
