Choosing artificial grass starts with your space, rather than the longest pile or the lowest price. A balcony, a decorative courtyard and a busy backyard can have different requirements. This guide explains what to compare before buying synthetic turf for your home.

Start with the purpose of the space

Write down who will use the area, how often it will be walked on, whether pets will use it, and how much direct sun it receives. Consider cleaning access and drainage as well as appearance. For a balcony, check building or strata requirements before planning an installation.

Compare pile height and construction

Pile height is the length of the grass fibres. Our CATHIE range has a 35mm pile; CASTLE and WENDY have a 40mm pile. Height alone does not establish durability, cushioning or suitability for a particular use.

Compare stitch rate, tuft gauge, yarn specifications and backing together. CATHIE listings specify 14 stitches per 10cm, while CASTLE and WENDY specify 18. WENDY lists PE7000 yarn, compared with PE5500 in CATHIE and CASTLE. These describe construction; yarn Dtex is not the same measurement as total pile weight. Check the individual product listing before ordering.

Look closely at colour and texture

Review close-up product photos as well as styled scenes. Mixed green tones and shorter thatch fibres affect the finished appearance. If a sample is available, examine it in sunlight and shade, feel the fibres and brush them in different directions. Styled garden images show an idea for a space; use product detail images to assess the actual turf.

Plan drainage underneath the grass

Drainage holes in a backing allow water through, but the base must also carry that water away. Ask your installer about the underlying surface, slope and drainage route. Avoid covering balcony outlets. For pets, plan how you will remove waste, rinse the area and prevent water collecting beneath the turf.

Measure and choose the right roll

For a rectangle, multiply length by width in metres: a 2m by 6m area is 12m². Then draw the layout, allowing for edge trimming and obstacles. Equal square metres do not always mean a roll will fit: its width and length must suit the shape. Keep the pile direction consistent when joining pieces.

Allow for care, summer heat and installation costs

Artificial grass does not need mowing, but it still needs care. Remove leaves and debris, clean spills and pet waste, and follow the supplier’s brushing and cleaning instructions. Synthetic turf can become hot in direct sun; plan shade and check the surface before children or pets use it in hot weather.

Compare the complete project cost, including delivery, base preparation, joins, edging, fixings and any specified infill. Read the artificial grass warranty and check its conditions rather than assuming every type of wear is covered.

Your buying checklist

  • Confirm the intended use and sun exposure.
  • Compare the full construction, not pile height alone.
  • Check the exact roll dimensions and plan joins.
  • Work out drainage and cleaning access.
  • Include installation materials and delivery in your budget.
